I heard an interesting sales pitch this morning on TV.   The spokesman, a well-known actor, opened his pitch with speaking of “the dire shape” our nation is in, financially and governmentally. Well this is nothing new. It’s like “Duh? Have you been watching the news lately?” The woes in this nation and other nations are on the news everyday and all throughout the day. I’ve gotten to the place that I wake up asking what has been blown up or who has been shot, who is protesting, and what are they protesting? What hate group hates another hate group, and is taking it out on each other in the streets where we have to watch it on TV? The hateful things being said in politics. The sexual predators in Hollywood who are now being revealed. The continuing revelations of dirty tricks, dirty lies and post illegal activities of governmental leaders, are just a few. One would have to live totally off the grid, and in a cave to not know that our country is in dire shape. I hope you are not one of those people who think everything is peachy and we will process through these times as a nation and eventually everything will be just fine. I don’t think there is any way that what I am seeing ends without some major difficulties ahead. I think most people are of this mindset, at least the ones I talk to. Why do I bring this up? Well … back to the sales pitch this morning:

The pitchman went on to say that there is only one way to be safe in these times of uncertainty within our government, and the national and world economy. Now at this point everyone is all ears, for the pitchman set it up nicely. Then he gives us the answer for these dire times we are in. Here it comes: “You’ve got to buy gold!” I had to laugh, but I wanted to cry for that is the way most of the world sees it to be safe in dire times which is to buy gold or go into every other perceived self protection plan someone can come up with. Here’s how I see what is being offered by the pitchman and others like him. They are saying in essence: “Dig a hole, jump in it with your gold, and bury yourself. After the threat has past, dig out of your hole, and pat your self on the back and tell yourself that you made it through this one and ask what is the next solution for staying safe.” Give me a break. What if someone finds you and your gold and steals it? How safe are you? But not just with gold. Is there anything that is foolproof or entirely safe? Really?

I can get how this sales pitch would appeal to an atheistic, secular society that thinks survival is all that counts, for what they get in this life is the best they will ever get. But, what about the Royal Priesthood?   What about God’s family? Is our mission in life only to hunker down and arrive safely at the end? Is that really what Jesus gave His life for, and doing this fulfills our purpose as His Church? Do you believe this theory? Do you really believe that buying a bunch of gold and putting it in the safe, a bank, or even a hole in the ground is the safest way to weather dire circumstances? If we as God’s children think this, then we need to rethink His call on our life and His promises. Let’s talk about the problems predicted, and the promise from Jesus when it comes.

The Problem:

“But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come.  For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,”  (2 Timothy 3:1-4 NASB)

The Promise:

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

(John 16:33 ESV)

My challenge to you is to look at the scripture above speaking about the difficulties that would come, and ask yourself if you see these things happening now. If you see them you need to know this: It will get worse. Now think about what you need to do about it. Do you want to safeguard yourself, or do you want Jesus and all His resources, and His presence in your life to be your comfort and place of safety? Jesus has made a promise to His family. Yes we will have difficulties. Don’t be naïve in thinking that you will be exempt from this even though you are a Christian. But Jesus is Lord, and He is your Lord. Live under His Lordship and take comfort in the complete safety He gives you. Nothing will befall you except that which he has given permission to come. Trust Him. Lean into Him more securely than ever before. Even if a trial will take your life, it will not overcome you. You are safe in His sovereign care of your eternal life. Our bodies and this life are but for a moment in time in our eternal existence. They will all one day die and decay. But our soul and spirit lives on. Knowing this, and living with this in mind removes the fear of what we may face with these bodies and this life. Jesus is better and safer than gold or diamonds or anything this world can provide. We have Him and this is why we never have to fear the changes and challenges that come to us in this world, for His grace is always sufficient. About gold?  Even His streets are paved with gold.  Maybe gold is not as valuable as people say.  After all … it is only paving material in Heaven.
