Conspiracy

August 31, 2021

“Do not call conspiracy everything this people calls a conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread.”  (Isaiah 8:12-13 NIV)

I do not want to be cynical and say there is no truth to some of the recent conspiracy theories out there, for there likely some that are true and alarming.  I’ll respect you and your theories, although I might not join you.  But let’s agree that not all of them are true.  I think most people get this, and for that reason we are given a smorgasbord of theories to feast on.  You can choose your diet on any which one you want to embrace.  But be careful.  Your conspiracy may become your idol and push out your hope and peace that comes from God’s Lordship over your life.  Let me give you only a small dish of conspiracies on our smorgasbord.

  • The Illuminati: Theory – The secret rulers of the world.  They are in control.
  • The 9/11 attacks: Theory - It was an inside job made up by our battered government.
  • Vaccine objectors: Theories - Everything from the vaccine makes people ill, to being designed to restructure our DNA, to it being Bill Gates attempt to microchip humanity.
  • Covid-19 is a cover-up: Theory – The virus is being caused by 5G towers, and/or it is a Chinese bioweapon.
  • QAnon: Theory – US politicians, officials and Hollywood celebrities are Satan worshipping, pedophilic cannibals.
  • The world is flat – Yep. Some people will believe anything.

I’ve only listed a few theories as examples.  Maybe your pet theory is in there, or not?  Even so, if you are a follower of Jesus Christ, and you have faith in God’s sovereignty over your life, I have to ask you a serious question.  “So what?  What if your favorite theory is true … what if all of them are true, how does that change God’s sovereign rule and authority over your life?  Does that mean He is out of control?  Does that mean He is ringing His hands in anguish, fretting that these theories will overturn His will and His plans, and you will be taken from Him and His plans for your life?”

It would not take much for me to join many of the theories out there.  I look at the world, our government, the changes in our societies, the media indoctrinations attempting to restructure the thinking of this country, and I can see a lot of conspiracy that has been going on for years.  But I have another view that overrides what I see.  It is a biblical world view.  I look at current events and interpret them through a biblical lens, and quite frankly, I’m not surprised by many of the things that are now taking place.  I’m only surprised by how rapidly it fell on us, and how it has shaken many people worldwide. More surprising is how many Christians are living in such fear when they think their pet theory, or all of them, will come and rule over them.  Never do they connect the dots that Jesus told us things like this would happen.  We are to expect it.

I have a theory why followers of Christ allow such fear about these theories in their lives.  I believe it is because they do not look at current events through a biblical world view and because of this they forget that this world is under Satan’s dominion.  I believe it is because they do not have faith in the promises of God Almighty that they say they trust.  I believe it is because they do not really understand what Sovereign God means.  I believe they identify with two kingdoms … the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world.  This is itself is a big conflict within a follower of Christ, for it is the fear that this world’s kingdom will let them down that causes them to lose hope and live in fear.  By dwelling on these thoughts that are driven by theories, whether they are true or not, reveals that they put more credence in the threats coming from this world’s kingdom rather than the authority that God’s Kingdom has over this world and the theoretical threats.  Little wonder that they live with fear and distrust.  They are in conflict with what they say they believe, and what they practice.

We cannot have it both ways and find peace in this present time of danger and threat.  So, let me please bring you a little peaceful thought from God’s word to strengthen you.  Many of you are asking what to do.  This is one of the big struggles we have.  We just do not know what to do with all this, or what to believe.  Here’s the peaceful thought I promised.  It’s a scripture.  The people who lived in a time similar to us made this statement.  I suggest we do the same:

“And now behold, the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom you would not let Israel invade when they came from the land of Egypt, and whom they avoided and did not destroy— behold, they reward us by coming to drive us out of your possession, which you have given us to inherit. O our God, will you not execute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” (2 Chronicles 20:10-12 ESV)

“For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us.” Is that how you feel?

“We do not know what to do, …” Is that your concern?

“… but our eyes are on you.” Is that your response?

Got the message?  We don’t know what to do, but Almighty God does.  Trust Papa and keep your eyes on Him.  That is where we find our peace and security.  He’s got this!
