TUESDAY- The Foundation

One of my daughters was having a conversation with me the other day, and she started questioning whether the idea of "Legal Marriage" was really in the Bible.  I saw the effects of this culture darkening the doors of my home.  I heard a statistic just the other day that the Divorce rate in America is actually down, but then I heard the reason...people aren't getting married.  In this narcissistic society where the only absolutes are the ones you create, people define their morals based on what feels good in the moment.  Satan has been successful in shifting the moral compass to a point where co-habitation, gay relationships and single parenthood are becoming the norm.
For those of us who are seeking the Lord, who are His disciples and who want to be used by Him to make a difference in the world, I say we have got to fight for our families.  We have to start by establishing a firm foundation.  We have to build our families on The Word.  God has convicted me in my own journey of faith in this regard.  I love God's Word, and I feast on it regularly.  God gives me nuggets of treasure every day as I read and journal through Scripture and the Holy Spirit enlightens me.  I have grown so much because of doing this the past 20 years of my life.
But what about my family?  My oldest daughter has been growing leaps and bounds in her faith lately, as she has become involved in a great campus ministry.  I've always thought she was strong in her faith, but she shared with me that she did not have a strong Biblical foundation to prepare her for what she faced in college.  She didn't realize that her words were like a dagger in my heart.  I thought I had done such a good job as a Daddy.  I had prayed over my daughter, I had taken her to church, I had done some Daddy/Daughter dates, I had been there for her, but I had overlooked a very important aspect.  I had not fed her God's Word and taught her how to feast on It herself.
Likewise, my wife has been studying God's Word like never before, and she is seeing some amazing things, but she likes it when we discuss it together, and I give her my insights.  Unfortunately, we have not done this enough.
God's Word is the Truth.  It is the essence of Christ.  It was given to us to teach us how to live.  It is applicable today and every day.  It is our North Star.  In this ever-shifting world, we must cling to our Absolute.  We need to spend time with our families, reading, studying, discussing, journaling and feasting on God's Word.  I am challenging myself to lead my family through the Book of John for starters, just a few lines at a time, for as long as it takes.  Pray for me that I can press through all the distractions and deterrents to make this happen.  Imagine what might happen if all of us Influencers started saturating our families with God's Word.  I believe it would start a revolution in our thinking.  We have to practice what we preach!
"Fix these words of Mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the Lord swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth." Deuteronomy 11:18-21 NIV
