Monday - Some Good News
Everyday, several times a day, I read the news. I look at national and world news mainly. The reason I read it several times a day is because something generally happens that continues to reveal to me that this world and this nation is tearing itself apart. There is a negative dynamic in today's news that presents the inevitability of a world at war (people against people) as a looming threat. What does this do to me? It seems that I now live with a dark and foreboding awareness that something bad is about to happen. It is hard to turn a deaf ear to what I'm seeing around the world. It reminds me of when I was a child in the cold war era, when we as school children were shown films of what to do if we see a mushroom cloud on the horizon. Any of you remember those films? Honestly, did you believe them? I'm sure hiding under a desk in case a nuclear weapon was dropped on us would really help protect us, right? That is what I grew up with, and is how I feel now. I feel in some ways that we are being told that the political and social remedies being presented by politicians and activists are all the people of this Country and this world needs, when in fact what they are saying has as much of a chance of turning things around and protecting this Nation and creating harmony and peace, as that school desk had with protecting us from an atomic bomb. So what do I do about this threat? What should we do about it? Is there a place where we can go that rises above it while living in it?
I could do like many other people do, especially men, by going to my favorite sport or hobby or habit, or politicians and chase those "heroes" around like they are the answer to the "darkness" that I feel around me? It sure would distract me and allow me to tune out and find that temporary peace we all need. We could all jump into a hobby or interest that would make us a whole lot happier instead of carrying the weight of concern for our family, country and this world at large that we bring along with us. But that remedy sounds a lot like the way I dealt with responsibilities when I was a young man. Back then, I found a way to not think about discouraging things by going to my happy place with activities or distractions that I enjoyed. Unfortunately, even though I tuned myself out of those responsibilities, I did not get out of their sight or their effect, and I had to deal with the consequence of my neglect as a result. It was often very difficult because of it. It is that experience that weighs on me now and tells me that I cannot simply walk away or disengage from the challenges that God's family lives with today. I cannot leave these issues alone and instead go and find a happy place for myself like no one else matters. The battle is just too serious, and the consequence will be too great if it is lost. Do you feel this way?
The truth is, I am not the only one who feels this way. Many of you men and women struggle with these negative messages we are receiving from the news and our world around us. We want and need to make sense of it all and to understand what is happening. If we need to, we all want to be prepared for what is in store. We want to know how to adjust, adapt, and progress into the future while not forfeiting our souls in the process? We want to know how to live with peace and joy in a world that seeks everyday to take it from us? But the question I think that is of greater value is, "What is God saying to us, His family, about these days? Is He preparing us for something?" I believe God's family is receiving a clarion call from heaven that tells us to get ready, for a lot of changes are about to happen. I believe we are being told to get our house in order. Tomorrow I will discuss what I am hearing with this call, and hopefully this week we will turn our attention to the Good News that we are not hearing in the news we hear each day. Oh yes. There is good news, and you will be hearing it this week.
