The Joy of the Lord

Friday - Inexpressible
Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an
inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls. (1 Peter 1:8-9 NIV)
Inexpressible (synonyms) indescribable - overwhelming - deep - indefinable - unspeakable
If I haven't made a case in your mind for desiring to find and live with the joy of the Lord, maybe the synonyms above will help.  They might describe what you are missing?  Are you coming remotely close to them?  Do you want to settle for anything less?  Maybe there is another adjustment to your thinking that might need to be considered to find it?  Back to another ditty:
"If the world hasn't given you joy, then the world can't take it away."

I think there is a litmus test of sorts that identifies real joy or simple happinessHappiness is iffy, wishy-washy, and happens at times in our life.  It is circumstantial.  It is a happening.  We might have a positive outlook and could be described as a happy person, but our happiness will be challenged when we have things that do not make us happy.  Negative news, disappointments, broken promises, betrayals, loss of job, health issues, all of these can make us unhappy.  God's joy can weather them all.  But can it be this way in our life if we block it?  That is where our perspective plays a big part.
Several years ago I had a misunderstanding concerning my joy and its fragility.  God's joy should not be frail, for God is not frail.  But our identity with Him could be fragile if our circumstances come between Him and us.  If we allow this to happen, it will show us if we have joy or happiness.  God's joy is bullet proof under all circumstances.  That doesn't mean we are not hurt, or grieved, or saddened or disappointed, or disturbed.  Those things happen.  It is called life.  But they don't take our joy.  God's joy weathers the storms that God's man sails through while happiness looks for a quick, manmade solution to get out of the storm as quickly as possible.  If we do not understand this, our joy will be as fragile as our circumstances.
My learning situation had to do with working with people who were unethical in their behavior toward me.  It went on for several years, until I realized that I was unequally yoked with people who could not be trusted and I needed to separate from them.  But God didn't let me out of that employment until I found my joy first.
During the process and until I found God's joy, I could go to the office, manage my day and time, and be very productive.  But then out of nowhere, I would receive a slam against me for no reason.  It was an emotional roller coaster with these people, not knowing what would come next.  Perhaps you can identify with my challenge?  I was a victim, and it was during this time that I came to see these people as my "joy robbers."  Got any "joy robbers" like that in your life?  Well they are not joy robbers.  They are happiness robbers but not joy robbers, and this reveals the problem.  My perceived joy was circumstantial and it was only happiness that I was experiencing.  God's joy could not have been robbed, and the fact is He revealed to me through this experience that I hadn't found His joy yet.
People cannot take your joy away if you are in a right place with Him.  The only thing that will rob it from you is to believe a circumstance or ruthless people are greater than your God, and this reveals where your problem lies.  If this is happening with you, your escape from the fragility of happiness to joy must first begin within your heart by putting your circumstances and these people under God's sovereign rule, along with yourself, and then fix your eyes on Him.  Remove the doubts, fears, resentments and discouragement your circumstances or people give you from being between you and God, and fix your eyes on Him.  Trust Him more deeply, while believing that nothing can get to you unless He permits it.  Then God's joywill be found and the strength of God will flow to you.  He becomes your shield and your high tower and nothing can conquer this, even those old "joy robbers" you once had.
God is raising up men whose joy will not be robbed by anything that this world can dish out, for the world did not give us our joy, and the world cannot take it away.  End of story!
