The Unshakable Kingdom of God

“For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the LORD, who has mercy on you.”  Isaiah 54:10 (NLT)

In your mind what do you see as the most unshakable person, place of thing that you can put your trust in?  Is it mountains and oceans, or stars and planets?  Is it a relationship with someone, or something you can hold close such as cash, gold or land?  Is it yourself, for many people feel that they are the master of their own destiny and it starts and stops with them?   Is this you?  Some people rely on the stock market, government leaders, their pastor or church as if they are unshakable. Unfortunately, all these props I’ve listed have experienced dynamic change in the past to prove how shakable they can be.  If not, they will be shaken in the future for each of these people, places or things are vulnerable to outside influences that can alter their reliability, even though they may try to remain stable.  It is the world we live in, and this truth needs to be embraced if one wants to find the true unshakable kingdom that they can rely on.

Little wonder that we seem so disappointed when our sure fire, dependable sources let us down.  It is because we were greatly mistaken by putting our complete trust in something that is bound to fail.  It’s just a matter of time.  We have an unreasonable expectation that something in this world and produced by this world can be fireproof, theft proof, erosion proof and flex for all situations that can create change and instability.  I can make no better case than to point out that this time last year no one expected a pandemic to crash our shores and create such havoc.  College and professional sports were cancelled.  Restaurants closed.  Shopping was altered.  Churches closed for a while and some to never reopen.  Travel all but ceased.  People lost their jobs.  People lost their businesses.  People lost their marriages and their family.  People lost their bearings, and many lost their minds.  The fear of a hidden enemy lurked in our streets and invaded the peace of a country that seemed invulnerable to such a thing.

Then there were the protests, riots and angry mobs who ripped down and burned national treasures as if they were garbage.  Businesses were shuddered and criminals were allowed to roam the streets to do just about anything they wanted to do without restriction or punishment.  The cancel culture movement surfaced to try and eradicate the good that this country has stood for, and to cancel the history of the good that this country has given to the world and to western civilization. Make no mistake in thinking that the aim of this movement is about health and unity in our land.  It is about removing freedoms and liberties that this country had fought for and protected, and to impose tyrannical rule over law and order.

So be honest.  Is there any way that any of us could have seen this coming last year at this time?  Could we had even imagined that our safe, strong and vibrant country could be so mortally wounded in just one year that it is in great danger of collapse?  I hate to be a forecaster of doom, but many of us saw it coming from a biblical perspective and have not been surprised by it.  It was bound to happen for it is only one of many governments and kingdoms that have come and gone in this world.  Still, the speed of the changes still dumbfounds a man like me.  I did not expect that part of it.  It came so fast, and it hasn’t let up.

I hear people say often that they just want it to return to the good old days.  Sorry but that will not happen.  We might get back to a semblance of a society we once loved and cherished.  But it will be different and ever changing.  Don’t give up looking for it.  I feel that it is still good to seek and hope to find a stability that will help us weather each storm of life and each society that we find our self in, whether we like that society or not.  We just have to realize that we cannot find what we are looking for on this earth.  We have to find it by seeking the unshakable and unchangeable kingdom of God.  It is there and there alone that we find that He never changes and that which we deep down long for is found.  This longing going on in Christians and non-Christians alike should now be seen as it truly is.  This is why I say that many of us have not been surprised that a turmoil has been released to turn us to God’s unshakable kingdom.  We’ve expected it.  It is now on us and it is to be gladly received.  Consider the following verse to understand from a biblical perspective what is going on in this world and likely in you.

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved.”  Romans 8:18-24 (ESV)

I believe that we, the Church, are going through a childbirth of sorts.  We are being reminded that we are citizens of another kingdom and we should get ready for Christ’s return.  We’ve put our hopes and dependence on people, places and things of this earth that are not Almighty God and His interests far too long, and things are about to change.  We must embrace these changes.  We are entering a period that I believe will be one of the most dynamic periods in the Church’s existence.  We are entering a period of a great awakening in the Body of Christ and it will lead to what we’ve looked forward to.  I don’t know about you but I welcome these changes for it reminds me in no uncertain terms that the King is coming … and He is close.
